Obituary of Granville Worrell
Granville Worrell was called by the Lord to eternal rest on Thursday, October 7, 2021. He was born on September 16, 1938 to his parents, Cecil Cumberbatch and Eldica Worrell in the St. Peter Parish on the Island of Barbados. He grew up with his brother,Elwin, and attended school in the local community. He had a dog named Rex and rode around on a Vespa scooter as his form transportation.
As Granville grew older, he took up carpentry and was very passionate about this trade. He travelled all the way to the British Virgin Island of Tortola to pursue this career.
He would move to Canada for a short time where he worked in construction. This is where he met his future wife, Judy Devonish and followed her to the United States.
On August 9, 1969, Granville married Judy at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Harlem, New York. In 1971, they welcomed their first child , Derwin Worrell, and eventually settled in Queens, New York.
In 1980, Granville married his second wife, Evelyn Meyers. Shortly after, he had his second son ,Byron Worrell, and some years later he would have a third son, Devin Worrell.
While in Queens, Granville took on the career of a salesman, selling various products, but he was a carpenter by trade. Honestly, he was a jack of all trades, there was not anything that he couldn’t do. As he aged, Granville spent his time working at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. He was a diligent employee, he worked there for ten years until he finally retired.
Throughout his life, Granville loved serving God and was a faithful member of Grace Church. Every Saturday, in preparations for church service, he would mop the floors, rake the leaves, shovel the snow, etc. What ever his church needed, he was happy to oblige. He even was a member of the church choir. Granville was also a talented piano player, a skill that he and his grandson, Austin Worrell, shared and bonded over.
Granville is survived by his three sons; Derwin Worrell, Byron Worrell and Devin Worrell; niece Lisa Worrell and grandson, Austin Worrell.
