Mary Moody
Mary was born on September 16, 1924 in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Ben and June Waller. On Tuesday June 22, 2021, God closed her eyes and granted her sweet rest.
Upon her arrival to Harlem she attended Mary Bethune Elementary School, Harriet Beecher Stowe Intermediate School and Seward Park High School. She also received a license for Cosmetology and completed Private Trade School for a teachers certificate at the University of the State of New York, and she received an Associates’ Degree at LaGuardia Community College.
On August 8, 1945, Mary met and married Wilson Moody. She and Wilson moved to Queens, Later in their union, borned a daughter, Andreii Kandy Moody. They were married over 58 years until his death on November 20, 2007.
Mary deemed her faith and relationship with God important. At an early age she accepted Christ, developed her faith after joining Grace Episopal Church, Shaw A.M.E Church where she was consecrated as Deacon and spent her later years attending First Baptist Church of East Elmhurst.
Mary had a long career as an educator and entrepreneur. She and her late husband owned a shoe store in the Bronx, Vacation Resort in Moodus, CT called Moodies Lodge, Big City Realty and a Beauty Shop.
She was employed by the Department of Education of New York City as a Paraprofessional Trainer where she retired on October 12, 1995.
Mary enjoyed entertaining families and friends at her home for the Annual Christmas Party each year and Birthday Celebration at Jericho Terrace. She also organized bus and airplane trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas.
Mary received many citations, rewards, and proclamations in lifetime, but two highlighting experiences of her life were being crowned Miss Fine Brown Frame of Harlem, and receiving the City Proclamation of “ Mrs. Mary Moody Day” at City Hall in October 2019.
Mary supported young people of the Corona and East Elmhurst Community. She committed her time and resources supporting the Flushing Meadow Soap Box Derby.
Mary is survived by her Daughter: Andreii Lynch, Grandson: Zachery Lynch, Adopted Son: Rev. Patrick Young, Adopted Daughters: June Gay and Diane Sarro, Niece: Hilary McKain, Tiffiny Evans. Nephews: Robert Evans and George Fant. God Daughters: Debra Hargroves, Tammi Durant, and a host of relatives, adopted children and friends.
