Obituary of Robert L. West

Robert L. West, son of the late Parnell and Gracie West was born on December 22, 1932 in Newport News, Virginia. Robert was adopted by his uncle and aunt William and Elennore Coles at the age of five. He departed this life on the afternoon of Thursday, August 13, 2020 at Elmhurst Hospital, Elmhurst, New York.
Robert L. West grew up and was educated in New York City. He taught Sunday school during his teenage years. He joined the U.S. Army at eighteen years old. He served in the Army for two years and was a decorated Korean War Veteran. Robert also served with the National Guard.
Robert L. West was given a special ceremony in 2017 to honor his service and was presented with a National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and a Combat Infantryman Badge. He also received an American flag that was flown over the capital building along with its accompanying certificate of authenticity, in honor of his service to the country.
Robert L. West worked for the United States Courts for thirty-two years after serving in the U. S. Army and was honored for his high-quality performance.
Robert L. West met the love of his life and married Irene Walker West, whom he adored. They were married for 65 years. He joined First Baptist Church in the fifties where his wife was a member. He was a proud and dedicated father to his late daughter Beverly Ann West Alexander, Karen Bolling (Bill), NY- daughter since five years old and Sonia Jackson, NY - daughter since fourteen years old.
Robert L. West enjoyed vacationing, long distance driving and taking care of his grandchildren.
Robert L. West is survived by his Wife, Irene; Grandchildren: Chenoa Alexander of MD and Jared Alexander of PA, Sisters, Louise Watkins of NY and Doris Randall of NY, Sister-in-law Lizzie Jester, NY, Mathew Bates Sr., long-time friend and brother, NY
Nieces: Denise West, NY, Yvonne Cunningham, NY and Tami Watkins, NY, Janell Randall, GA and Crystal Bates, NJ: Nephews: Ronald Watkins,Fl., Jerry Watkins (Maggie), WA., Darryl Watkins (Renee) NC, Leamon Mincey,NY and Mathew W. Bates, Jr.(Arnetta), NY.
Goddaughters: Sheri Marshall-Miekle, NY, Diane Bailey, GA, Sonia Bailey, NY, Robin Sanders, NY, Shirley Griffith (Griff) VA, and a host of grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives and friends.
Robert L. West was a loving and kind man that loved life and his family. He will be missed by all.
