Avis McKenney also known as Mommy, Grammy, Auntie Avis, Moe, Bass Fiddler Holmes was born Avis Viola Mullings on January 29,1928 to Victor and Gladys Mullings, She departed this life on Thursday, May 7, 2026.
Avis spent her childhood in Harlem, New York, and was educated in the NYC Public School System. Avis was enriched with innate musical talents as a classical pianist and playing the Bass Fiddle. Avis had the honor of meeting First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at her high school, Wadleigh High School during President and Mrs. Roosevelt's visit to New York. Avis composed Wadleigh High School's anthem and had the privilege to perform the anthem for President and Mrs. Roosevelt.
Avis met her future husband Richard McKenney and married on April 17, 1949. From this marriage they welcomed their daughter Linda and son Richard Jr. They lived in Harlem for 10 years before moving to East Elmhurst, Queens near her brother, Alvin and cousins Jacynth and Buster. They lived a beautiful life together taking family vacations alternating each summer between Osterville, Mass near the Kennedy Compound and Canada, hosting family gatherings and celebrating friendships.
Avis attended NYU for two years. She worked at the NYC Youth Board before moving to Manhattan Vocational Technical High School. She was recognized as Secretary of the Year. Mastering additional skillsets, Avis became Assistant Principal until she retired.
As a cradle Episcopalian, Avis was a vital pillar of the Church of the Resurrection exemplifying Christian virtues and spiritual strength. Avis was active in her community as a member of Elmcor Senior Center, was the founding member of the AARP Corona/East Elmhurst Chapter 4977. Avis chaired the Dollars for Scholars program providing scholarships to high students to advance their education.
Avis enjoyed the arts, reading the NY Times, often writing Letters to the Editor voicing her discontent on articles she felt were biased and misrepresented facts. Avis loved fashion, was photographed in the Sunday NY Daily News centerfold with her husband Richard and best friend Thelma on Easter Sunday. Avis loved to dance, was a world travel to many exotic places with her sister-in-law, Margaret, taking girls trip to Atlantis Bahamas, playing bingo, pokeno, and her favorite Bid Whist.
Avis is survived by her loving daughter Linda, son in law, Aldo, granddaughter, Caitin, fiancé Johnathan, niece Michele, nephews Billy and Michael, godchildren Kim and Karen, numerous nieces and nephews and caregiver Carlotta. She is predeceased by her husband Richard and son, Richard, Jr.
Avis was a remarkable woman. She will be remembered for her beauty, grace, unwavering strength, generosity and joyful spirit. Avis had a wonderful celebratory 98 years of life!
