Obituary of Gilbert Oswald Joseph

Please share a memory of Gilbert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Gilbert Oswald Joseph, known affectionately to family and friends as Gilly, G, or Gilly J, passed away peacefully on January 23, 2026, at the age of 74.

Born November 28, 1951 in Mackenzie, Guyana (British Guiana), the eldest son of Edward Mortimer Alexander Joseph and Maive Eileen Joseph, Gilbert spent his early childhood surrounded by the warmth of his large family and community. He attended Mackenzie High School, where his curiosity, drive, and quick mind first began to shine. As a young man, he migrated with his parents and siblings to England. He went on to further his education at the University of Sheffield, where he earned a degree in mechanical engineering and developed a love of learning and intellectual exploration. He later returned to Guyana, where he joined the managerial staff of Guyana Bauxite Mining Company, before eventually moving to the United States, where he built a successful career and a life full of rich experiences.

In the U.S., Gilbert worked as a mechanical engineer before transitioning into public service as an Emergency Management Performance Specialist for FEMA, where he helped support communities in times of crisis. He retired from FEMA after many years of great work, leaving behind a career of professionalism and a career marked by dedication and skill.

Outside of work and family, Gilbert poured his energy into the activities he loved. He was a lifelong fan of football (soccer), tennis, and cricket, drawn to the strategy and discipline of each game. While he enjoyed a variety of games, dominoes held a special place. His competitiveness, sharp thinking, and love of winning not only earned him many championships but also created a strong sense of community around the table.

Gilbert had a natural wit and a quick sense of humor that could make people laugh without trying. More than anything, he will be remembered for the quiet lessons he shared, the calm presence he carried, and the meaningful moments spent with those who knew him best.

Gilbert is survived by his loving family: his wife, Joy Babb Joseph; his daughters, Nina Ruiz and Naomi Austin, and their spouses, Carlos Ruiz and David Austin; his five grandchildren: Andrew Ruiz, Aidan Ruiz, Adam Ruiz, Gabrielle Austin, and incoming grandson Joshua Austin; his eight siblings: Lorraine Joseph-Langevine, Ena Allen, Beverley Messerli, Sandra Joseph Brown, Evette Reid, Alan Joseph, Ewart Joseph, and Alicia Greene; his step-daughter, Diaon Carmichael and step-grandchildren, Fern Mckoy and her three siblings; his ten nieces and nephews: Simone Allen-Zufolo, Syretta Allen-Hussein, Beverley Forrester, Michael Langevine, Rebecca Thompson, Rene Messerli, Laura Morgan-Johnson, Curtis Reid, Myles Reid, and Abigail Greene, as well as a large extended family of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and relatives across generations. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Gilbert leaves behind an enduring influence and many cherished memories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

Lovingly Submitted,

Tha Family
