Malcolm Donald Pennington, Sr. was born on January 2, 1937, to Malcolm B. Pennington and Bernetha E. Green-Pennington in Orange, New Jersey.
He resided in Wilmington, North Carolina for approximately 40 years. Malcolm attended Clifford J. Scott High School in East Orange, New Jersey during his freshman and sophomore years, and later attended Orange High School in Orange, New Jersey for his junior and senior years, where he graduated in 1955.
Malcolm was united in marriage to Ashley (Jane Freeman Booth) Pennington from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. He later married Helen Fulton Pennington in the early 1980s, remaining married until her passing in the early 2000s.
He proudly served in the New Jersey Army National Guard in the late 1950s. Over the course of his working life, Malcolm held many professions. He worked as an over-the-road truck driver until the mid-1960s, then as a life insurance agent with Mutual of New York until the early 1970s. He also owned a carpet store, was employed by Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery, and later became a skilled cabinet maker. He ultimately retired in the early 2000s from his business, Cape Fear Mica Tops, in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Malcolm was preceded in death by his first wife, Ashley (Jane Freeman Booth) Pennington (1990); his second wife, Helen (Davis Fulton) Pennington (2011); his daughter, Lysa Marie (Hale-Corbin) Pennington; his son, Daryl Sarrell Freeman “Buz” Pennington; his grandsons, Malcolm G. Pennington IV, Sillmond S. “Poncho” Hale Jr., and Bradford Scott Pennington Sr.; and his daughter-in-law, Celesta Pearl “Punkin” Smith-Pennington.
He leaves to cherish his memory his three sons, Malcolm D. Pennington III, Eric Sean Gregory Pennington, and Scott Pennington; 19 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, along with a host of extended family and friends.
